MY 2015 FAVOURITES: EYES

2015 Eyes 3

2015 Eyes 1

2015 Eyes 6

It’s that time of the year again, where I talk about my favourite makeup products of the year. In 2014 I posted them all in one giant post but I decided to do something a little differently this year and I’ll be splitting them up to eyes, lips, base and everything else (i.e. everything non-beauty product related). And first up is my favourite, all about the eye makeup.

Starting off with palettes, there’s been one that has really stuck out to me this year – the Lorac Pro Palette 2. I’m lucky to own the original Lorac Pro Palette too (which I mentioned in last year’s favourites, coincidentally!) and whilst that is one of my favourites, there’s something about this one which I love all that bit more. Maybe it’s the colours themselves, but I’ve never seen a palette quite like it shade-wise. My favourites have to be Nectar, which is a terracotta-peach matte, Cool Gray, a warm gray (ironically) matte and Rose which is a rose gold shimmer as the name would suggest. The formula of these is incredible, highly pigmented and they blend like a dream – so if I were to suggest one thing for people to try out, it would certainly be this. I know it’s practically impossible to get a hold of in the UK but if you get the opportunity, it’s well worth picking up!

Speaking of eyeshadows, I’m normally one to favour palettes due to the handiness of them but there are two single eyeshadows that I’ve been reaching for a lot this year; an old favourite and the other a relatively recent find of mine. One that’s been hiding in the back of my makeup collection for as long as I can remember is MAC eyeshadow in Amber Lights which I’d describe as a bright copper shimmer. I’ve always been a little hesitant on how to wear it but this past year it’s become a real staple for me and on days when I’m feeling lazy, it’s a great for a wash of colour all over the lid, or even just blended into the crease. I tend to have my eye makeup as the focal point each day, so there’s nothing more I love than a daytime smokey eye. A Kiko store recently opened up in Newcastle so a little browse was totally necessary and that’s where I picked up this single shadow in 175 Dove Gray. I’d not heard much about their formulas so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’ve been really pleasantly surprised with this one in particular, as it’s dark grey matte finish is perfect for when I’m wanting to smoke out an eye look. I think it can be quite difficult to find a colour like this that doesn’t have any shimmer to it, but alas I’ve found the answer – and it’s buttery formula makes it super easy to blend.

In terms of brows, I’m still a bit rubbish with them and struggle most days to make them look presentable. However, using the Maybelline Color 24 Hour Tattoo in Permanent Taupe has been an absolute life-saver for me the past 12 months. Applied with an angled brush, I lightly brush this through my brows to add that little more shape and definition (as mine are really fine) as part of my daily makeup routine. I do have to be quite careful I don’t go overboard, because crispy brows, but the colour is a great match for me as it’s very cool toned. Plus it’s very afforable which is a great plus.

When it comes to eyeliners and mascaras, I don’t tend to buy them very often. And when I do, I’ll use them up until the very end. Mascara-wise, when I received this Benefit They’re Real Mascara in Brown I was slightly unsure whether I’d get much wear from it as I tend to favour quite dramatic eyelashes on a daily basis. However, I’ve really been enjoying using it over the past few months as it’s great for those days when I’m favouring a bolder lip. I find it a little uncomfortable to apply, but the result is well worth it. I’m normally very much of a quick swipe of liquid eyeliner and go kind of girl, however at the start of the year I had one of those No7 vouchers to spend (we all know the ones) so I treat myself to the No7 Stay Perfect Shade and Define in Coffee Bean. I’d describe the shade as being a deep chocolate brown with some glitter running through it. Primarily an eyeshadow stick I prefer to use this along my upper lash line blended out to create a smokey daytime look. I find the shade really complements my eye colour and I’ll certainly be picking up more to try in the new year!

So what are your eye makeup favourites? Anything you think I should give a go?

THE BEST PLACES FOR CAKE IN NEWCASTLE

PetLamb5

If there’s one thing I probably couldn’t live without, it’s cake. I absolutely love meeting up with my favourites and catching up over cake or taking a cake break whilst in town taking outfit photographs. I’ve lived in this city for my whole life now and it’s always been a little poor in the cake department, but in the past few years many places have opened much to my taste buds delight. So when I was contacted by the lovely people over at Travelodge challenging me to name where I’d recommend to anyone visiting Newcastle, I thought it would be fun to tell you about my favourite places for cake. One which is more of a sit-down cute cafe and the other a small shop which have the best selection of cupcakes to go – both which are independent and both which are incredible!

The GB Cupcakery

Easily my favourite place to visit for cupcakes and the biggest slices of cake you can imagine is The Great British Cupcakery. It’s located a stones throw away from the iconic Newcastle Quayside, so is a must to anyone visiting the city (and anyone local who just hasn’t been). Often quite busy, you sometimes do have to wait a few minutes or so for a table to become free but it’s well worth the wait as they have a huge selection of cupcakes, cakes and scones available. Oh and the biggest milkshakes known to man, like, seriously. I’ve rather shamefully worked my way through half of their menu (not. even. sorry.) and my favourite so far have to be the Red Velvet cupcakes, Salted Caramel and Chocolate cake and Carrot Cake cupcakes – they’re all equally wonderful!

Pet Lamb Patisserie

If you’re looking to pick up a cupcake/brownie whilst you’re exploring the city centre then The Pet Lamb Patisserie located in the Grainger Market is a great shout. Unlike The GB Cupcakery this is a small store without seats, but their brownies especially are not to be missed. I’m talking they have Nutella, Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel and even Raspberry variations here, all which are as amazing as they sound. Everything is baked behind the counter too, meaning you’re met by the most incredible sweet smell when you walk in too, which is a total bonus. Alternatively if you’re looking to try these goodies whilst resting your feet, there’s a cat cafe in Newcastle City Centre called Mog On The Tyne (yes, you get to spend an hour cuddling little kittens) where you can enjoy some cupcakes/brownies from Pet Lamb Patisserie there too!

So where are your favourite places to eat cake? I’d love to hear your recommendations – whether you’re local to Newcastle or not!

FESTIVE MAKEUP FAVOURITES

Festive Makeup Favourites 1

Festive makeup is one of my favourite parts of this time of year, with any opportunity to pile glitter on my face being a good one. And I often find the getting ready for a night out more exciting than the night out itself as I love playing around with my makeup collection.

I’m definitely my least ambitious when it comes to base makeup, because lets be honest here, buying pretty lipsticks and eyeshadow palettes is much most exciting. As I’m quite pale I don’t have the biggest collection of foundations going (well, I do, but most leave me resembling a wotsit so they’ve been retired) so I tend to just go with the coverage I need at the time. During the day I often favour a dewy finish but at night I much prefer to play with highlighter, so I use a powder to matte my skin and then strobe away with my favourite MAC Minerialize Skin Finish in Lightscapade on the higher points of my face i.e.cheekbones, brow bone and cupids bow.

Base aside, I love to play around with my eyeshadow all times of the year, but for the festive season, I have a few special favourites. A new addition to my collection is my Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette which I received in October. This palette contains a vast selection of neutrals all on the cooler side which I find complement my skin tone the best. I’m particularly loving YDK right now which is a very in-your-face frosty rose-gold which I pack onto the lid with a flat brush and Busted blended in the crease. Instead of using a liquid eyeliner which I can find looks a little too much with heavier makeup on me, I’ve been enjoying smudging a darker eyeshadow, such as MAC Eyeshadow in Black Tied along the lash line smoked out. I love how this can easily transform an eye look and it’s super easy to do as it’s certainly not about precision. For my daytime makeup, this Stila Eyeshadow in Oasis (similar linked) has won my heart. It’s more of a yellow gold with a satin finish, but it’s perfect to just sweep over my eyelids for that wash of Christmas cheer.

When it comes to lips, depending on my eye makeup I’ll either go for a neutral lip or my fail-safe matte red, for which I’ve been loving the Topshop Velvet Lips in Blood Orange (similar linked) recently. As the name suggests, it’s more on the red orange side which can make it a little trickier to wear but I love the pop of colour it can add to an all neutral outfit. Plus the formula of this is incredible, I’m talking you can go through eating a burger and it won’t have budged. Amazing. If I’ve decided to go dramatic with my eye makeup, then I head straight for a neutral lip product. Fun fact: until last year, I didn’t own any neutral lip colours. One of my favourites is the Rimmel Lasting Finish by Kate Lipstick in 45 which is a dark nude colour. It’s actually slightly lighter than my natural lip colour (which would normally terrify me) but it’s satin formula means it doesn’t cling at all if I’ve been rubbish at remembering to apply lip balm and it’s one of those lipsticks you can apply without a mirror – which is great for someone like me who doesn’t like to faff around once you’ve left the house reapplying. And if I’m after a more matte finish, then I recently picked up the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm which is again another darker nude, but this time more on the terracotta/peachy side.

What are your festive makeup favourites? Any you think I should give a go?
